Synopsis:

Emerging Voices 2026 features (8) 10-minute plays written by student-playwrights at Marin School of the Arts, performed by an ensemble of professional actors. Plays are undergoing selection process and may include: 5 MINUTES (Until the End of the World): A loner must team up with a woman from the future to prevent the planet’s imminent destruction. ANSWERING MACHINE: A widow facing eviction is visited by her late husband’s ghost and struggles to move on. COMPENSATION: A scientist kidnapped by his former partner must confront the bitter past that destroyed their friendship and company. THE DIRTY DOCTOR NO GOOD'S FINAL CONFRONTATION WITH HIS GREATEST RIVAL MR. BE KIND: Two cartoonish nemeses face off in a final riddle-filled showdown that could even endanger the moon. F-I-G-H-T CLUB: A reformed bully must decide whether to help an old classmate escape a dangerous fight club by giving him the fight he’s asking for. FLOWERS FOR MA: A grieving girl meets a living statue who helps her find the strength to return to her mother’s funeral. I'M A RUNNER: A young athlete and his mom grapple with decisions about his future, after an injury ends his sports career. LET'S PRETEND: A man struggles to keep his job as his childhood imaginary friend derails his attempts to set grownup boundaries. MINA'S DINER: A tense family dinner forces a teen girl to choose between her toxic father and the possibility of stability with her uncle. THE MURDER ON MURDER STREET: A frustrated 1950s housewife confesses to murder after an inept detective bungles a case in her new home. OH, BROTHER: A father tries to play mediator between his adult children when getting lost on a hike forces long-buried family issues to surface. TO MY DEAREST PUPPETEER: A young woman pursuing law battles her own internalized sexism when a TV character steps into reality to sabotage her ambitions. WRITTEN TESTIMONY: A lawyer and judge’s unresolved romantic tensions explode in court while their defendant is stuck listening.

Project Notes

Actors perform multiple roles (approx. 3 characters per actor) in an ensemble. All collaborate as part of the same rehearsal and performance process. Emerging Voices works with High School playwrights to guide them in developing their craft and producing a line-up of 8 of their selected plays.
