About the Job

A middle aged local known around town for doing odd jobs and small favors fixing a fence here, helping unload a hay truck there, or mending someone’s porch steps for a couple of bucks and a cold beer. He’s the kind of man who believes a handshake still means something, and he prides himself on knowing everyone within ten miles of the county line. When Donovan walks back into town after years away, Earl spots him alongside Hank Dobbins. Earl grins, wipes his hands on his jeans, and calls out, “Well, look who finally came back!” expecting at least a nod or a smile in return. But when Donovan keeps walking, silent and distant, Earl’s grin falters. Unlike Hank, Earl takes the slight personally. He mutters under his breath, puzzled and a little irritated not out of malice, but out of that small town pride that comes from believing everyone ought to show respect when spoken to. To him, Donovan’s coldness feels like an insult, though he doesn’t understand what the boy’s been through. Earl Haskins is a simple, hardworking man loyal, quick to laugh, but just as quick to take offense. Deep down, he’s not a bad person; he’s just someone who measures the world by manners and reputation. When Donovan brushes past him, Earl can’t help but wonder what kind of trouble or pain could turn a once friendly kid into a stranger.
