LEAD RUSSIAN or RUSSIAN ACCENT PRINCE FELIX YUSUPOV Heir to one of Russia’s richest houses; his older brother, Nicholas, was killed in a duel in 1908, making Felix the sole heir. Handsome, delicate, fine features, capricious, socially fearless. Publicly frivolous, privately calculating. Known for his flamboyance and having dramatic tendencies, he also famously dressed like women in his youth, delighting in risk and performance. Rumors of a deep, possibly romantic bond with Grand Duke Dmitri add an undercurrent of intimacy and ambiguity to their conspiracy. Despite bravado, Felix often wavers, nervous, stalling, and increasingly shaken as the plot unfolds, his dread intensifying the chaos of the night. Lures Rasputin to Moiko Palace, serves him poisoned cakes and wine, later shoots him with a revolver. Hopes: to “save” the dynasty’s honor. Fears: scandal engulfing his family and the throne. Goals: remove Rasputin to halt Alexandra’s reliance on him and end the perception of German influence at court (Alexandra’s birthplace). Relationships: husband to Nicholas II’s niece Princess Irina; friend-conspirator with Grand Duke Dmitri; ally of Purishkevich and Sukhotin.
